A letter to US Congress (A Draft Proposal) 給美國國會的信件草案﹐ 反對部份議員支持台灣“入聯公投” ChuenHsiung Hua 美國紐約中國和平統一促進會會長花俊雄 On November 8th, 2007, as Taiwan’s leader Chen Shui Bian continues to press a referendum on Taiwanese membership within the United Nations, nineteen U.S. Representatives introduced a bill to the House Foreign Affairs Committee, advocating and supporting Taiwan’s admission to the UN. We undoubtedly feel that this is a dangerous separatist move on the part of the ruling Taiwanese government and will surely provoke a decisively strong and potentially dangerous reaction from the People’s Republic of China and its government. The introduction of this bill to the House in support of Taiwanese membership in the UN is in direct violation of the current official U.S. policy of “One China”. This proposed legislation also directly contravenes General Assembly Resolution 2758(XXVII), which declares that “the representatives of the People’s Republic of China are the only lawful representatives of China to the United Nations.” Furthermore, sovereign statehood is a prerequisite to be admitted to the UN, a standing that Taiwan has yet to achieve within the international community. We strongly oppose the House bill introduced and sponsored by U.S. Representative Scott Garrett (R-NJ) and his colleagues on the grounds that it directly contravenes official U.S. foreign policy, is harmful to the fragile peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, and will seriously hinder future Sino-American relations. We hope and strongly urge that legislators vigorously oppose this bill and prevent its presentment for either a committee or floor vote. |
